Polly Courtney vs. Chick Lit

We all know by know that high-heeled shoes, shopping addictions, and the search for Mr. Right is what most people think about when pondering the much denigrated women’s literature genre, Chick Lit. And this is exactly what British author Polly Courtney does not want her potential readers to think about when they see the cover of her book. That is why, at the launch of her latest novel last month, It’s a Man’s World, Courtney chose to publicly dump her publisher, HarperCollins, for misrepresentation. Courtney claims that the cover art did not accuratly reflect the content of her novel.

“I’m not averse to the term chick lit, but I don’t think that’s what my book is,” Courtney stated in a Guardian.co.uk interview adding that “a lot of chick lit patronizes women.” However, some disagree with her and suggest that Courtney may be suffereing under an illusion about her writing. One such opponenet, Leah of chicklitreivews.com, wrote, “No matter what Polly says, she writes Chick Lit. That’s the long and short of it…What Polly doesn’t realize is that her comments are patronizing. Women aren’t fooled by beautiful pink covers.” Continue reading

Confessions of an Academic Addict

I have made the decision to return to school in an attempt to cut out my own little chunk of academia. I think I’m going to paint it with a coat of candy colour, drown it in a fruity booze beverage of some kind, and taking it shoe shopping. Madison is fresh out of school with her journalism degree but finds she is jobless as print media lays on its deathbed and the economy is stuck in the middle of a recession. With nothing to do Maddy joins her best friend from college, Karsynn, in Pocatello, Idaho where they both are hired as customer service reps at Lightning Speed Communications call centre, a DSL and cell phone provider.  Maddy quickly learns that call centre work is thankless and passes the time gossiping with cubical mate Truong while day dreaming about her charming Belgium coworker, Mika. Maddy interacts with a hodge-podge of personalities in both coworkers and customers while trying to remain sane in call centre work and get Mika to notice her as more than ‘just friends.’

Feminist Fiction: Lucie Simone Guest Post

Lucie Simone, is a woman after my own heart. She’s the woman that I didn’t think existed when I started this blog… I thought I was the only chick-lit loving feminist! After following her blog, where I discovered that Lucie is also a vegetarian (like me!), film buff (like me!), and yogi (like…ok, like some other women I know!), I jumped at the chance to host Lucie and her new book, Hollywood Ending! It is with great pleasure that I welcome Lucie to the Bitch Lit Blog!

Feminist Fiction – Lucie Simone

Being a feminist in the 21st century is no easy feat. Sure, Virginia Woolf, Susan B. Anthony, Simone de Beauvoir and Gloria Steinem paved the way for us modern girls to live life on our own terms, pursuing our careers, our educations, and our loves without restrictions. But now that the big battles are won, there is still a lot of work to be done.
